Choosing a Swing Check Valve for the Line
Swing check valves are widely used in water, utility and industrial process piping. The hinged mechanism is straightforward, but it still needs enough forward flow for stable disc movement. Sizing only by the pipe diameter can overlook how the valve will behave when the system runs at reduced flow.
At a pump discharge, closing response matters as well as normal operation. Pipe layout, pump shutdown and the rate at which flow changes can influence noise and pressure surges. A swing check valve should therefore be considered as part of the system, rather than as a universal answer to water hammer.
