A water supply line may need a valve to isolate a section for maintenance, or a valve to adjust the flow during operation. Those are different jobs. Gate valves are usually chosen for isolation; globe valves are useful where manual flow adjustment is needed. The right choice starts with how the valve will be used, then the size, pressure rating and materials required by the project.
Gate Valves for Isolation
А засувка opens or closes by moving a gate across the flow path. With the gate fully open, the passage offers low resistance to flow. This makes it a practical choice for isolating water mains and distribution branches. It is normally operated fully open or fully closed, rather than left partly open to regulate flow. A standard multi-turn gate valve is also not a quick-shutoff valve.
Globe Valves for Flow Adjustment
А запірний клапан controls flow by moving a disc or plug towards or away from its seat. It can be used for isolation and manual throttling, where the selected model is suitable for the duty. Its internal flow path generally creates more pressure loss than a fully open gate valve, so that trade-off matters when pump capacity or available pressure is limited. Diameter alone does not decide whether a globe valve is suitable.

Pipe size affects the available valve options, installation space and operating effort. Gate valves are commonly used on larger water lines where low resistance is useful. A globe valve may suit a branch requiring flow adjustment, but check the pressure loss at the required flow rather than choosing by diameter alone.

Both gate and globe valves are available in different pressure ratings. Check the selected model’s pressure-temperature limits, body material and connection standard against the project specification. Neither type is automatically the high-pressure choice.
3、Operating duty
Consider whether the valve will stay fully open for long periods, be closed for maintenance, or be adjusted regularly. Use a gate valve for isolation and a suitable globe valve where throttling is required. If access is difficult or remote operation is needed, discuss the operating arrangement as well as the valve body.

Choose body and sealing materials to suit the water quality, temperature and any treatment chemicals. For drinking-water projects, confirm any material and approval requirements in the project specification before ordering. A general water-service description does not establish compliance with a particular local requirement.
For a water supply line that needs full-open or full-closed isolation, a gate valve is often the starting point. Where manual flow adjustment is part of normal operation, consider a suitable globe valve and allow for its pressure loss.
