Industrial valve standards help buyers define a valve’s construction, dimensões, pressure-temperature ratings and inspection requirements. Different standards answer different questions. A design standard does not replace a flange standard, and a leakage test does not by itself establish that a valve suits the process.
This guide explains how to use commonly referenced standards in an inquiry and avoid mismatched specifications.
Separate the Main Specification Requirements
- Design and construction: the valve type, materials and construction requirements.
- Pressure and temperature: the rating for the selected material and configuration.
- Connections and dimensions: flange compatibility, facing and face-to-face or end-to-end length.
- Inspection and testing: shell integrity, closure leakage and acceptance criteria.
- Special qualifications: fire testing, fugitive emissions or other project requirements where applicable.
Common Standards and Their Scope
| Referência | What it addresses | Purchasing consideration |
|---|---|---|
| API 600 | Steel gate valves with flanged and butt-welding ends and bolted bonnets. | Use for a valve within its scope; it is not a generic design standard for cast iron gate valves or globe valves. |
| API 602 | Portão, globe and check valves of DN 100 (NPS 4) and smaller for petroleum and natural gas industries. | Confirm the construction, size and connection configuration covered by the project specification. |
| API 609 | Double-flanged, lug and wafer butterfly valves. | Specify the applicable category and rating arrangement for the selected valve. |
| API 598 | Valve inspection and testing. | Define the required tests and acceptance criteria together with the valve specification. |
| ASME B16.34 | Pressure-temperature ratings and construction requirements for covered flanged, threaded and welding-end valves. | Check the selected material and rating; do not treat a class number as a fixed pressure at every temperature. |
| ISO 15848-1 | Classification and qualification procedures for valve fugitive-emission type testing. | External stem or body-joint emissions are different from leakage through the closed valve seat. |
Specify the edition required by the project or contract. The table summarizes scope; the official standard and the selected valve’s technical documentation determine the detailed requirements.
Match the Valve Standard to the Material and Type
A válvula de gaveta de ferro fundido, a steel gate valve and a globe valve are different products even when the pipe size is the same. Start with the intended function and body material, then identify the appropriate standards for the offered construction.
Ask the supplier to identify which requirements apply to the exact model being quoted. A general list of API, ASME or ISO references does not mean every valve in a catalogue meets every listed standard.
Check Flange Compatibility and Installation Dimensions
Provide the connection standard, pressure designation, flange facing and required installation length. Compare the offered dimensions with the existing pipeline or design drawings.
DN and NPS are nominal size designations. Avoid treating them as exact measured diameters or assuming that a similar nominal size guarantees interchangeable flanges.
Define the Inspection and Documentation You Need
Include the required inspection and test standard, closure leakage criteria, material documentation and any third-party inspection in the inquiry. Where a certification is required, confirm the certificate holder and product scope for the offered configuration.
Special requirements should be identified before quotation. They can affect materials, sealing arrangements, test procedures, lead time and price.
