Wedge gate valves provide isolation by lowering a wedge-shaped gate between the valve seats. When fully open, the gate lifts clear of the flow path; when closed, the wedge meets the seats to shut off the line.

Wedge Construction and Shut-Off
The angled seating arrangement is the defining feature of a wedge gate valve. The gate may have a solid or flexible construction, while the sealing surfaces may be metal or resilient-seated, depending on the model. A flexible wedge and a resilient sealing material are different features.
These valves are normally used fully open or fully closed. Holding a standard wedge gate partly open for continuous throttling can expose the gate and seats to wear. For regulating duty, compare a valve designed for flow control.
The stem arrangement affects the space needed for installation. An OS&Y rising stem gives a visible indication of gate travel; an NRS design keeps the external stem height essentially unchanged as the valve operates.

Matching the Wedge Gate Valve to Its Service
For water supply and general utilities, cast iron models offer a familiar isolation arrangement. The Z41X/Z45X resilient-seated series is one option to compare with the metal-seated models in the range.
For industrial process and plant piping, the cast steel wedge gate series and stainless steel Z40W/Z41W provide different body and trim combinations. The medium, working temperature and pressure rating guide that material choice.
For media containing fibres or substantial solids, consider whether a different gate construction would suit the duty better. A conventional wedge gate should not be assumed to handle abrasive slurry simply because it is used elsewhere in a mining or process plant.
